Take More Action to Prevent Dust Explosions
Take More Action to Prevent Dust Explosions
One year after 14 workers died in an explosion at Imperial Sugar, combustible dust fires and explosions continue to occur at US businesses. OSHA has not begun rulemaking on a comprehensive combustible dust standard, as recommended by the Chemical Safety Board in 2006. More needs to be done, according to CSB Chairman John Bresland. That's the safety message for February 4, 2009.

Acid Mine Drainage Water Pollution 1951 Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board
Acid Mine Drainage Water Pollution 1951 Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board
This is clipped from the film, Waters of the Commonwealth, was prepared by the Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board in 1951 to carry the story of water pollution control directly to the general public. Abandoned mine drainage is water that is polluted from contact with mining activity, and normally associated with coal mining. It is a common form of water pollution in Pennsylvania and in other states where vast amounts of mining took place in the past. There are several issues with abandoned mines that impact water quality: acid mine drainage, alkaline mine drainage (this typically occurs when calcite or dolomite is present) and metal mine drainage (high levels of lead or other metals drain from these abandoned mines). Acid mine drainage is the formation and movement of highly acidic water rich in heavy metals. This acidic water forms through the chemical reaction of surface water (rainwater, snowmelt, pond water) and shallow subsurface water with rocks that contain sulfur-bearing minerals, resulting in sulfuric acid. Heavy metals can be leached from rocks that come in contact with the acid, a process that may be substantially enhanced by bacterial action. The resulting fluids may be highly toxic and, when mixed with groundwater, surface water and soil, may have harmful effects on humans, animals and plants. The film was done during the term of Pennsylvania Governor James Duff who initiated programs to clean up polluted streams, including the highly industrialized Schuylkill ...

Big Oil Fuels John McCain's Straight Talk Express
Big Oil Fuels John McCain's Straight Talk Express
therealmccain.com Gas prices are hitting all-time highs. Our country is in the midst of a recession thanks in part to our crippling dependence on oil, so what's John McCain's plan? Will he hold the corporate leaders of the energy industry accountable when he addresses them today in Houston? Probably not, considering they are some of his biggest fund-raisers. The Center for Responsive Politics finds that McCain has accepted over $1 million from the oil and gas industry. Many of McCain's top advisers have lobbied for big oil, which is why he now acts in their best interests, opposing environmental legislation and alternative energy plans. And that's exactly why we want everyone to know The REAL McCain. McCain is desperate to distance himself from President Bush. But according to the Center for American Progress Action Fund, McCain has received millions in donations from the same oil, coal, nuclear, chemical, utility, and auto companies that helped the Bush administration create its energy plan—a plan that has raised gasoline to $4 a gallon. Here's what you can do: Send this e-mail to ten of your friends, family members, and colleagues. Tell them to send it on to ten people they know. And don't forget to Digg it! Spread the word that McCain is taking major contributions from wealthy oil executives like Bob Mosbacher, just one of the special interest leaders he'll be addressing in Houston.

Action on the Michigan Shore Railroad.
Watch a transfer freight of covered hopper cars as it travels from the ex CSX North Yard to the ex GTW Henry Street yard in Muskegon Mich. Then watch a night run of the MSRR version of the old C&O "Cannon Ball" as it crosses Laketon Avenue Crossing. Then watch the Cannon Ball as it charges up "Strawberry Hill" on Airport Road Norton Shores Michigan. I inadvertently stated that the transfer job was sand cars. These were in reality empty cars from Fremont Michigan from the Cooperative Elevator. In C&O/CSX days, several insolated box cars and Mechanical Reefers where handled for Gerber Baby Food Company along with three 100 ton hoppers of coal for Gerber's cogeneration power plant. By the time Michigan Shore took over all trackage of the ex C&O/Pere Marquette "Allegan Subdivision", Gerber's had switched from glass containers to plastic cutting down on tonnage. It didn't pay MSRR to carry Gerber Baby Food as a customer. Gerber's today is served by truck. MSRR goes to Fremont Mich on an as need basis to service the Cooperative. MSRR serves an Ethanol Storage Facility at the old Napsol Oil Refinery in North Muskegon off M120. It provides Ethanol for gasoline blending at the Marathon Terminal. This Ethanol business has about 10 or so tankers a week. MSRR also serves Webb Chemical which handles about 10-15 tankers a week The closing of the Sappi Fine Paper Muskegon mill has resulted in the loss of about 60 box car loads shipped from Sappi along with a tank car loads of "caustic ...

Coal Free Oregon Flash Mob at LCC
Coal Free Oregon Flash Mob at LCC
As the youth of Oregon we recognize a responsibility to the present and future state of Oregon's ecological well being. As the generation that will inherit the majority of the harmful effects of our current state of carbon emissions contributing to global warming, we realize that the time to take action on these issues is now. We now have the technologies and resources to make a clean energy future for Oregon possible, and our goals are to promote and educate others about the implementation of clean and renewable energy resources. We feel that it is incumbent upon our decision makers to pursue the implementation of energy resources that are in the best interest of the citizens that they represent and steer away from those that do not. Through the systematic implementation of solar and wind powered technologies we can avoid using sources like coal which is responsible for up to 1/3 of all of Oregon's carbon emissions and air pollution. With the application of these energy resources will also come new opportunities for green energy jobs which will benefit Oregon's economy as well as it's sustainability and livability for generations to come. Can we afford to wait until 2020 to stop the West's largest stationary polluter? Portland General Electric has proposed to shut down the state's last remaining coal plant by 2020 as a revision of the existing plan, which calls for shutting the plant down in 2040. Unfortunately, the revised plan still allows 10 more years of heavy CO2 ...

DIRECT ACTION ALERT: GRAB THE BIRDS BEFORE BIG SIS
DIRECT ACTION ALERT: GRAB THE BIRDS BEFORE BIG SIS
Drudge Headline.....www.drudgereport.com The classic example of animals serving as sentinels is the canary in the coal mine. Well into the 20th century, coal miners in the United Kingdom and the United States brought canaries into coal mines as an early-warning signal for toxic gases including methane and carbon monoxide. The birds, being more sensitive, would become sick before the miners, who would then have a chance to escape or put on protective respirators. [edit]Infectious diseases The discovery of West Nile Virus in the western hemisphere was heralded by an outbreak of disease in crows and other wild birds. Other emerging diseases have demonstrated linkages between animal health events and human risk, including Monkeypox, SARS, and Avian Influenza. [edit]Terrorist events Some speculate that animals could provide early warning of a terrorist attack using biological or chemical agents. Since most potential bioterrorism threats are zoonoses (infectious diseases of animal origin), animals could also be at risk from a terrorism attack and may be first to show signs of illness due to increased exposure or susceptibility. For example, when anthrax was inadvertently released from a Soviet weapons facility in Sverdlovsk, livestock died at a greater distance from the plant compared to human cases.

Co-generation Power Plant at Nagda Site
Co-generation Power Plant at Nagda Site
LANXESS India, the subsidiary of German specialty chemicals company LANXESS AG, has started up the production of a state-of-the-art co-generation power plant at its manufacturing site in Nagda, Madhya Pradesh today. The cogeneration plant, which is fuelled by the biomass fuel - soya husk, will meet virtually most of the power requirements of the basic chemicals plant of LANXESS at the site. LANXESS will significantly reduce its carbon footprint by 70000 metric tons of coal per year and thus reduce about 95000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. In comparison, the combustion of biomass as a fuel is carbon neutral for the environment.

Occupational Illness - Work related compensation claims
Occupational Illness - Work related compensation claims
www.simpsonmillar.co.uk - My name is Emma Costin and I am Head of the Occupational Disease Department at Simpson Millar. Most people know what is meant by a personal injury but I am not so sure regarding occupational disease. We deal with a wide range of diseases, the most common of which are probably the asbestos related illnesses such as asbestosis, diffused pleural thickening, mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer but also work related deafness, dermatitis which can be caused for example by exposure to latex or cleaning chemicals or even hairdressing chemicals at work, also occupational cancers including those caused by radiation and exposure to poisonous chemicals. We also deal with stress at work claims and repetitive strain injury claims as well as vibration white finger and other neurological diseases caused by exposure to work equipment over a prolonged period of time. We have a specialist department at Simpson Millar that deals with occupational diseases distinct from any other departments because there are a number of issues related to occupational disease claims that are specialist. In particular, the exposure to the dangerous chemical or substance or work process typically took place either over a long prolonged period of time or many years ago so we can be dealing with companies or employers who have long since been dissolved or taken over, that means that we have to be specialists in tracing what has become of those companies and also their insurers, and having ...

Bigen Hair Dye Made Me Sick
Bigen Hair Dye Made Me Sick
.I used Bigen Permanent Hair Color # 57 Dark Brown ... I followed the directions and did the allergy test. After coloring my whole head, I developed throat swelling, itching, hives, welts , vomitting, eye swelling, lip swelling and a bumpy red rash all over my body. I was rushed to a doctor and given 3 medications ..... 2 weeks later, I still itch and have hives all over my back , neck , scalp, ears and belly. Doing research online, I found out BIGEN is not as " gentle and natural" as they claim it to be .... It is a highly concentrated chemical dye made of 3 (according to the label) forms of PPD; a chemical used in printing ink and toner as well as being associated with coal or tar. Here are a list of some of the other ingredients: •Sodium Perborate: an oxidizing agent used in the detergent industry to bleach their product. •P-Aminophenol: a chemical used in developing Black and White photos and film. •Para-phenylenediamine (PPD): a toxic agent that has been banned in Germany, France and Sweden since the mid-1900s. There is a lawyer in Atlanta who has started a class action lawsuit againt this company .... I am just want my money back for the product and I want to let people know how toxic this product is !!! I found a good blog regarding this: bigenhairdye.blogspot.com
